Our sample group, which included a range of Rental Car suppliers from smaller New Zealand owned businesses through to large international brands, compared the base daily rate for a medium sized rental car for a period of 3 days and a period of 7 days.
The purpose of the survey was to establish whether shopping around for the best rental car deal prior to booking is worthwhile.
Based on selected dates the survey results showed some regional variations in rental car prices. Overall the best car hire deals were in Auckland and Christchurch, closely followed by Wellington. The most expensive location was Queenstown.
The larger rental car organisations tended to offer consistent pricing throughout New Zealand whereas the prices offered by the smaller and franchised operators often varied between locations.
More significantly, there was a large variation in the prices offered by different companies with the most expensive mid sized rental car being almost twice the price of the cheapest car. It could be argued that our price comparison wasn’t totally fair as it didn’t allow for one company providing rental cars that are only 1 or 2 years old, while another company was offering cars which were a lot older.
Given that the purpose of the survey was simply to establish whether shopping around prior to travelling could provide worthwhile savings, then answer has to be an absolute yes. Renting a vehicle in Auckland or Christchurch and being flexible on the model and age of vehicle could literally save you hundreds of dollars on the cost of your trip. At the end of the day you still get to enjoy the same spectacular sights and activities as you drive around New Zealand.
